TERMINOLOGY & SLANG - common words & terms used in snowboarding
Air...to leave the ground on your board; to jump up and be in the air.
Back Foot...the foot placed closest to the board's tail.
Backside... the backside of the snowboard is the side where the heels rest; and the backside of the snowboarder is the side to which her back faces. (important when learning to rotate).
Bail...to quit, or escape out of, a trick either during approach or execution.
Base...the bottom of a snowboard. The side that comes in contact with the snow and is opposite of the side the rider stands on.
Binding...hardware device used to connect your boot to your board and transfer steering pressure from your feet to the edges of the board.
Beat... not good; over-used; undesirable.
Bevel... the degree of angle to which the edges of a snowboard are tuned. Snowboards used for racing and carving should have a greater bevel than say a snowboard used in the halfpipe..
Boardslide... when the riders whole body is facing toward the end of the rail/box and the board slides perpendicular on the rail/box.
Box... a rail-like feature that is wider than a rail so it offers more surface area.
Bust...to "do" something in an audacious and authoratative manner; as in "bust a move".
Butter... loading your weight onto the tip or tail of the board and spinning 360 degrees with the opposite end of the board off the ground.
Camber... when a snowboard is placed on a flat surface, the center portion of the board is raised and it rests only on the tip and tail. Camber is measured by looking at the amount of space between the center of the base and the flat surface on which it rests.
Carve... the act of turning the board from heel edge to toe edge so smoothly that the tail edge precisely follows the tip edge leaving behind only a single track in the snow.
Crater... to impact or smash in to the ground from a fall or wipeout.
Chatter... an undesireable vibration of the snowboard usually occuring at higher speeds or in turns.
Corduroy... after grooming by snowcat the surface of the snow is left with evenly spaced ripples or ridges resembling corduroy.
Edge... the thin strip of metal wrapped around the board. The edges are the "rudder" of a snowboard.
Fall Line... the natural path of a rolling or sliding object down a slope.
Forward Lean... The angle of degree to which the highbacks of your bindings, keep your ankles bent in a forward leaning position.
Free-Ride... a riding style in which the rider uses the whole mountain as his terrain.
Freestyle... a riding style which focuses on tricks and jumps usually performed in a Pipe, at a terrain park, or on manmade and natural objects on the mountain.
Freshies... Untouched, "fresh" snow.
Front Foot... the foot which is placed closest to the nose of the board.
Goofy Foot... riding with your right foot forward.
Grab... to grab the edge of the snowboard with one or both hands.
Grom... a young, or pre-teen snowboarder.
Heel-Edge... the edge on the side of the board that is closest to your heels.
Hucker... someone who throws themself off a jump without any regard to landing on her feet.
Hit... an object, man-made or otherwise, that can be used to perform tricks or jumps off of such as a ramp.
Invert... a trick where the head is beneath the level of the board and the snowboarder balances on one or two hands.
Jibbing... the act of performing various ground tricks or tricks off of features.
Kink... An "unsmooth" surface in a half pipe or jump. It could also refer to a bend in a rail..hence a "double kink" rail would have 2 sharp bends in it.
Liftie... a person who runs or attends the lifts.
Nollie... the act of springing off the ground using the nose of the board ("nose-ollie").
Nose Slide... To slide along the ground or an object on the nose of the snowboard.
Ollie... the act of springing off the ground using the tail of the board.
Park (terrain-park)... usually a designated area on the mountain where man-made jumps, rails, boxes, and other "trickable" objects are located for use.
Poach... The act of riding closed sections of a mountain (not recommended!).
Pow... Fresh snow..."powder".
Pumping... the act of moving your body up and down with your legs to gain speed.
Quarterpipe... half of a halfpipe. A ramp that transitions the rider to from "flat" to a verticle take of so she can get air and then land on the same ramp and then transition back "flat" again.
Rail... the act of sllinding a board on its base (while riding it)down a metal or wooden rail.
Regular Foot:... riding with your front foot forward.
Shreducate... the act of educating people to shred (© MissBoarder LLC 2007).
Skate:... the act of sliding one's self accross the snow with the front foot secured in the binding and the back foot left free to push with.
Snirt... A mixture of snow and dirt, seen most often at the end of the season. Must be treated with caution as contact with you gear may cause snirt stains, a mega-downer fer sure.
Stomp... to execute and land a trick with ease and near perfection.
Switch... riding with your back foot forward.
Table Top... a jump in which the take off and landing is connected by a long flat surface. Ideally, you should clear the "table" and land on the down slope.
Throwing Down... performing and landing your tricks to perfection.
Transition (Tranny)... The curved section of a halfpipe wall between the flat bottom and the vertical.
Tuck... A crouched position of low wind resistance used to attain higher speed.
Vertical (Vert)... The vertical top portion of a wall in a halfpipe.
